DIY Natural & Organic Yoga Mat Cleaner

The Empower Yourself Project - Organic Yoga Mat Cleaner

Our Holistic Center is located at Tamarindo, a beach town in Costa Rica. Like in all beach villages everyone wears flip-flops or sandals, the beach is 50mt away from our healing space, so you can imagine how much sand and dust my students bring with them whenever they come to class! But hey, that's life in tropical paradise! :) Yoga mats must always be, for health sake and mat longevity, as clean and purified as possible. After each class all our mats are sprayed with my homemade Organic Mat Cleaner and thoroughly sponged so that the students that come next will enjoy a clean and wonderful smelling mat.

As you you may know, I LOVE Essential Oils! I use them in my personal life and professional practice for many different purposes. Essential Oils are so so powerful and diverse that you can make many different recipes with different oils, catering to your own preference. Today I bring one of my very favorite recipe for it's fresh, herby, cool scent.

The essential oils used in this recipe have many therapeutic properties: anti-bacterial, anti-fungicidal, antimicrobial, antiseptic, bactericidal, deodorant, fungicidal, insecticidal and antiviral. These are all extremely important qualities for any kind of cleaner recipe, being that the “insecticidal” property is also fundamental in rural or beach areas, like the one I live in. These oils have also many different psychological, emotional and spiritual properties that will add to your practice and wellbeing.

I usually make a big batch, I teach daily so I require a large quantity of mat cleaner. I use a 1,5lt plastic bottle to store the mix, it's easy and practical! With this mix I fill spray bottles that are always available inside the classroom. You can make a smaller batch according to your needs and you can also store it in a dark glass bottle for better preservation over time.

I always find that “Less is a LOT more” in what concerns to Essential Oils. Essential Oils are very powerful and you don't need to use a huge quantity, EOs are extremely effective in small amounts! Also by being a cat lover, I have to warn you about EOs and cats, they don't go well together!!! EOs are extremely toxic to cats so be very careful when using them around cats.
